Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services are often known as CAMHS. You might be asked by your GP, School or other professional if you would like help and support, or you may want to refer yourself. CAMHS are here to help you with lots of different emotional and psychological difficulties. We have a range of professionals who work in CAMHS, such as Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Doctors (known as Psychiatrists), Art Therapists, Nurses and Youth Workers. We also have Family Therapists who may offer some sessions with you and your family, to help you all understand each others experiences in a more helpful way.

When you are first referred to CAMHS, the team will offer you an assessment where you get the chance to discuss what things are bothering you and how CAMHS might be able to help. There will then be a discussion with you, and your parents if you want them to be involved, and with the team, to see how CAMHS may be able to help you. It may be that CAMHS then offer you some further appointments to work through some of the difficulties you might be having. Or, It may be that a different service would be better suited to helping you; if this is the case, CAMHS will provide you with this information and make any other referrals with your agreement.

A Tour of CAMHS, Cross Street Clinic

This video was created by young people, for young people, following feedback from our Youth Participation Forum. They felt that a brief tour of Cross Street Clinic (Burton Upon Trent) would be helpful for others, to reduce worries when attending their first CAMHS appointment. Young people from the Youth Participation Forum were involved throughout the whole video production.

The CAMHS Early Years’ Service helps young children and their families when a child is experiencing emotional or behavioural problems. We tend to get involved when other forms of support are not enough on their own, or when the problem is particularly difficult.

We also offer support when difficulties are being experienced with the relationship between a parent and child.

We work with young children who aren’t old enough to be at school full time yet.  If we start seeing you before your child begins at school we may be able to carry on supporting you once your child goes to school. However, this will depend upon the nature of the support required.

We are the specialist Autism service for South Staffordshire. We are here to assess and offer support to you and your family. If you are aged between 0-19 years old (up to 25 if you have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)) and have a diagnosis or a working diagnosis of an Autistic Specturm Condition (ASC), then you and your family can access help and support through us. You can find out more about us from Children and Young People's Autism Service or you can ask your parents to call our duty line on 0300 303 0691 (9am - 5pm, Monday to Friday) and we can try to help you with any problems and difficulties you might have related to your autism.

Having autism means that your brain works a bit differently to most other people. Every person with ASC is different but some things people with ASC may find difficult are:

  • social communication
    • knowing what to talk about
    • understanding other people
    • making sense of facial expression and tone of voice
  • social interaction
    • knowing how close to stand to someone
    • knowing when to talk
    • understanding jokes
    • making friends
  • social prediction / rigidity of thought
    • needing routines
    • not liking changes
    • not knowing what will happen next

There are also some people with ASC who have sensory differences:

  • not liking loud noises or bright lights
  • only wearing certain clothes
  • not being able to sit still

We have helped lots of young people with these things.

How can we help?

Young people can come to us for help and support with lots of different things:

  • anxiety or worries
  • low mood
  • anger
  • behaviour that can cause them difficulties with others
  • sleep
  • speech
  • language and communication difficulties
  • low self esteem (not feeling good about themselves)
  • or just to understand their autism a little better

We can support parents over the phone with advice calls or you can come to one of our workshops to help understand what your autism means for you.

We also make sure that we look at the strengths that having an autism brain can give you! Having ASC can make some things harder but it can also make some things easier, like knowing lots about a special topic or having a really good memory! Don’t worry if you don’t like groups, you don’t have to talk if you don’t want to, but it can sometimes be nice to meet other people who understand what it is like to be you.

For some people, we may offer 1-to-1 sessions with a clinician if this is needed.

We have lots of different people who work within our service such as Clinical and Counselling Psychologists, Assistant Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists and Nurses. This means that we can help you with a lot of different things.

We are all really friendly and would like to hear from you if there is anything you would like some help or support with. Remember: there is no such thing as a 'silly worry' or question, so get in touch. We are here for you and look forward to hearing from you!

We are a community mental health team based in CAMHS, whose primary task is to provide home based interventions and treatment as an alternative to hospital admission. We work in partnership with children, young people, families and carers to assess, plan and implement therapeutic interventions and care to promote recovery in their community.

Our primary task is to provide intensive care and support as an alternative for accessing intervention for young people who would otherwise require admission to inpatient beds. For those young people who do require a period of inpatient care, we remain as their community contact and to facilitate early discharge from hospital.

We cover the whole of South Staffordshire and work alongside CAMHS clinicians in the different areas, Stafford, Cannock, Tamworth, Lichfield, Burton and the Seisdon peninsular.

The Paediatric Psychology Service provides specialist support to children, young people, their families, and wider medical teams to help navigate the emotional challenges that can arise from living with a chronic physical health condition. The service is provided to children with a GP in the West of the county (Stafford and Surrounds, Cannock, and Seisdon).

We see children and young people with a variety of physical health problems or life limiting conditions. This includes adjusting to a new diagnosis, coping with treatments or invasive procedures, managing pain or fatigue or dealing with the family impact of physical health. The child or young person would usually be under the care of a secondary care service and it is helpful for referrals to come directly from the involved medical team where possible. We are also commissioned to provide sessional input to the Paediatric Diabetes Service provided by UHNM at County Hospital, Stafford: any referrals for support around Diabetes should come directly from a team discussion with their Clinical Psychologist.

The Team are based at The Bridge, Stafford:

  • Dr Clair May, Senior Clinical Psychologist (Wednesday to Friday)
  • Rona Borland, Nurse Specialist (Thursday & Friday)
  • with administrative support from Lisa Goodsell

All referrals and referral enquires should be made directly to the team inbox paediatricpsychology@mpft.nhs.uk

We are always happy to discuss enquiries about a referral.

All of the team work part-time and so we will respond as soon as we are able.
